Event Details/Other Comments
November's First Friday Lecture, "Writing Reliable and Efficient Mathematical Software," will be presented by Gabriel Dos Reis, assistant professor with the computer science and engineering department at Texas A&M University. Dos Reis is an active member of the ISO C++ standards committee, where he regularly represents the French national association for standards. The lecture will be held Friday, November 6, 2009, in 111 Koldus. Lunch will be provided to registrants at 11:45 a.m. The lecture will begin at noon and end at 1:00 p.m.

The broader impact of Dos Reis' research includes mathematical software, programming languages and libraries, and generic programming. He authored or co-authored several extensions to C++0x, the next revision to the C++ programming language. He leads the OpenAxiom project, an open source platform for scientific computation. He also served as release manager of GCC, the GNU Compiler Collection.

Dos Reis received his doctorate in mathematics from the Université Paris-VII and École Normale Supérieure de Cachan, France in 2001.

The First Friday Lecture Series is a program of the African American Professional Organization held the first Friday of the month and is sponsored by the Division of Research and Graduate Studies.
